Christmas Color Schemes that Create Magic-According to LiLu
Fun with Christmas Color Schemes
Every Christmas presents an opportunity to fill your home with magic and cheer in the winter months. Living in Minnesota, I really enjoy adding a layer of sparkle and magic to our home over the month of December. This year you may be looking for a change and a fresh tradition so we added a new color scheme for Christmas based on the colors of the year! If I could, I would do a new theme for Christmas each year. My children, however, love the traditional Christmas décor they are used to! And since I adore them…I work to make their Christmas as heart-warming and nostalgic as possible for them.
So, I thought I’d have a little virtual fun creating five color palettes I would love to do and hopefully inspire you to have a little fun creating a fresh look this Christmas.

Christmas Color Scheme - Sage Green
This year, the color of the year is October Mist - a sagey, green gray. Personally, this shade of green is one of my favorites. Why not do an unconventional Christmas color scheme and serve sage green as the focal point?
Red and Green
Red and green is the most classic of Christmas color schemes. I love adding just a touch of gold and silver to this classic look with ribbon or embellished glass ornaments! Adding the sparkle elevates this color scheme.
The triple wreath from Balsam Hill is another way of adding a new twist to this look.
Silver and Gold
Silver and Gold are nostalgic for me and bring to mind the Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer animated special of my childhood.
Silver and gold, silver and gold
Mean so much more when I see
Silver and gold decorations
On ev'ry Christmas tree
Silver and Gold is also a classic Christmas color scheme! Since I love adding a twist to any classic, I added the lacquered magnolia wreath!
Bronze Christmas Color Schemes
New for 2020. Urbane Bronze is Sherwin Williams's color of the year for 2021 and I think it's time to jump on board with bronze as a new metal for Christmas decor. It has an earthy, grounded appeal, which feels right for this year and since it is next year's color of the year, I think it will have staying power.
Blue Christmas
A blue Christmas doesn’t have to be about the blues! While it does call to mind another Christmas song by Elvis, more recently we have been using this Christmas color scheme to families who celebrate both Chanukah and Christmas.
It’s also just a great modern look! After all Sherwin Williams has picked Naval as their color of the year for 2020
The glass star here is a great modern look for a Blue Christmas.
Blush Christmas
For a truly modern Christmas, try decorations in the color of Benjamin Moore’s color of the year for 2020 First Light or a blush pink with a slight blue undertone.
Pretty and light, this Christmas color scheme is sure to lift spirits and create a calm vibe in your home over the holidays! An all-original wreath is a beautiful touch and these hand-blown candle holders from Glass Baby keeps the look fresh.
Barbie Pink
Since 2023 is the year of Barbie, I thought it would be fun to add a Barbie-inspired Christmas decor mood board. This post is popular so I like to add to it and keep it fresh. A deeper pink than blush this color pairs well with gold and brings a bold fashion-forward attitude to Christmas.
Teal Christmas
Fresh, happy, and optimistic, teal and aqua are a natural mood lifter for Christmas cheer. Slightly nostalgic and full of zest! These colors for me are the clear winner for 2020.

I love an unexpected color theme for the holidays – the addition of the Barbie colors is so fun! I still adore the teal and the sage, though, those are some of my go-to decoration colors and that teal nutcracker ornament has my name on it!

Hi Lisa ~
First of all, I love all of the moodboard you’ve created so we can get a real sense of these difference color schemes.
Secondly, I love that you keep your own Christmas decorating *like it’s always been* because your children love it that way.
Thirdly, thank you for bringing so much color and joy into my life all year long through your blogs. They are always so informative and interesting.
I appreciate you and wish you and your family a very happy holiday season!
