Women in Design
By LuAnne Silvia, ASID
Our firm had the pleasure of hearing two of the women designers share their inspiration that are currently featured in the exhibit "17 Swedish Designers" at The Swedish Institute. The exhibit runs through May 30 and showcases products from industrial, graphic and interior design, including glass, ceramics, textiles, and furniture. What an exciting time for Sweden with such a large number of women in design who are innovators in their fields. Pia Amsell and Barbro Wesslander talked about their influences, passions, and product designs. A strong background in textiles, they met in school where they had the opportunity to explore different mediums. They graduated from Beckmans School of Design and started their own studio. Beyond the studio what they have in comomon are their fond memories of growing up in the country and love of the outdoors. They found inspiration in nature and carry that through to their designs. Bold, graphic, simplicity of form and pattern drive their concept of great design for everyday use. They both design under their own label, for others and for mass retailers like Ikea. When designing for others they enjoy a tight collaboration throughout the manufacturing process. Pia designs rugs for Adesso. Barbro designs a collection for Boda Nova. We were fortunate to hear from two of the designers first hand their personal stories which makes viewing each object a richer experience. The theme of the traveling exhibit is black and white with bright accents, be sure not to miss it!
The rest of the week we will be exploring other women designers who are innovators in their fields who we find inspiring.
