Waipi’o Valley

By Christina Winter, Allied Member ASID

Waipi'o Valley is as beautiful a place as you will ever visit.  Many people from our group set out to to experience unimaginably steep walls on all sides, waterfalls that etch the perimeterand a lucious mile long black sand beach.  It never fails to impress and it is a very sacred and special place to the ancient Hawaiians.  Because of its inspiring and tranquilizing effects, Waipi'o was often chosen as the meeting place for chiefs when imporatnt decisions had to be made.

To get to Waipi'o Valley do not think about driving a regular car down the road.  It has a steep grade of 25%.  You will burn up your brakes if you even try and really you would probably end up jumping from your car because you would be so afraid that the car would start to roll down.  The angle of the hill makes it feel like the back of any vehicle is about to flip right over the top of you!  Some of the group did the walk down and then did the walk up....It's less than a mile but the walk up can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour.  What an amazing feat!
