Retro 60’s and Folklore
By Ally Evander, Allied Member, ASID
The next yin and yang pair is the Retro 60’s and Folklore. Retro 60’s style is casual, characterized by rhythmic or psychadelic patterns, fluid forms, and plastic furniture. It is about rebellion and questioning norms.
The style of Folklore is about heritage and culture. It emphasizes craft and how things are made. Features of the style include lots of texture, woven patterns, and ornamentation made of natural materials such as fur or wood.
These two styles seemed the most opposite yin/yang pair to me. But they are both about respect for individuals, past and future. Which description and picture seems most appealing to you?
Reinterpretations: A Sign of the Times
By analyzing which styles are appealing, you may gain better insight into why you are attracted to the things you like for your space. A style that has roots in ideas that relate to your own personal sentiments is a good place to start if you are having trouble discovering what holds together all the things that you love.
Overall, these 4 style groups relate to the trend of living smaller and cocooning. They are about turning inward, but still remaining connected to the world. It relates to people wanting a connection to the past and their heritage because they value it more than they used to. These trends are not about "what’s in" this year, but about the human context of design and how it influences us.
