Peek at a Project: Custom Nightstands

by Ally Evander, Allied Member, ASID

We recently designed a pair of custom built nightstands for a client after looking around and not finding anything that was quite right for their master bedroom. The first step was to present the idea to the client. In order to illustrate what the finished product would look like, we created this computer sketch:

The clients agreed to move forward with the custom piece, so we created construction drawings so our builder would know exactly how to make it. We made sure to consider all the details, from the oak grain waterfall pattern match to the 1/4" bead on the drawer fronts. Here is one drawing detailing the front and side:

We gave the client a few options for hardware and agreed that these knobs were a great choice:

We decided we wanted the frame to be a limed oak and the drawer fronts to be painted blue to pull color from the room. Next, the wood shop provided us with a finish sample for our approval. We thought it looked great and gave them the go ahead to start building. And a few weeks later, we were able to install the finished product in the homeowner's master bedroom. We love them and so do our clients!
