Moving on Up! Designing a Right-sized Home for a Growing Family
A Peek at a Living Room Designed for the Next Chapter
Moving into a new home marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter, but it doesn't mean leaving everything behind. For many families, the best interiors aren't built by starting over—they're created by thoughtfully building upon what already works while making room for the life ahead.
In this first installment of our Moving on Up! Designing a Right-sized Home for a Growing Family series, we're sharing how LiLu Interiors helped one family transition into a right-sized home that better supports their growing family. Through a minor remodel and major decorating project, we reimagined their existing furnishings, introduced new pieces with intention, and created a living room designed for everyday life, meaningful connection, and years of memories to come.

Designing a Home That Evolves with Your Family
One of the greatest opportunities when moving into a new home is the chance to see your belongings with fresh eyes. Rather than replacing everything, we begin every project by evaluating both the architecture of the new home and the furnishings our clients already own. We ask thoughtful questions that guide every design decision: What pieces still serve the family well? Which furnishings carry sentimental value? How can they be reimagined in a completely new setting? And what new elements will help the home better support this next season of life?
This approach creates interiors that feel authentic and layered rather than newly furnished overnight. It also allows families to preserve meaningful investments while creating spaces that feel refreshed, intentional, and uniquely their own.
Planning a Living Room Around Everyday Living
At LiLu Interiors, every successful room begins with a plan. Before selecting fabrics, finishes, or furniture, we develop multiple space plans to understand how a room can best support the people who live there.
For this living room, our clients had one clear goal: they wanted a space to truly live in—not simply admire. They envisioned a room where family could gather at the end of the day, stretch out with a good book, enjoy movie nights, or spend time together without feeling like they were sitting in a formal living room reserved for special occasions.
To explore the possibilities, we developed several furniture layouts, each offering a different approach to the space. After reviewing the options, the family chose the plan centered around a generous sectional. Its inviting shape encourages everyone to put their feet up and settle in, while an oversized upholstered ottoman replaces the traditional coffee table, adding comfort, flexibility, and a softer, more relaxed atmosphere.

Mixing Existing Favorites with New Furnishings
One of the defining characteristics of timeless interiors is their ability to blend old and new effortlessly. Several cherished pieces from the family's previous home became important anchors in the new design.
Sophisticated French bergère chairs upholstered in rich navy velvet brought elegance and history into the room, while a treasured toy cabinet continued to serve both practical and sentimental purposes.
To reinforce visual continuity throughout the space, we intentionally repeated touches of navy across the room, allowing the eye to move comfortably from one furnishing to the next. We also relocated custom display cabinets from the family's former game room, placing them on either side of the living room entry where they now frame the space beautifully while showcasing meaningful collections.

These beloved furnishings were complemented with carefully selected additions, including a large sectional upholstered in a textured, family-friendly performance fabric, a generously scaled swivel chair covered in a playful plaid, and two comfortable lounge chairs with matching ottomans tucked into the bowed window. Together, these elements create a welcoming reading nook while balancing the scale of the room.

Throughout the space, layered textures, varied pattern sizes, painted and wood finishes, and carefully selected fabrics work together to create the sophisticated yet relaxed feeling that defines a thoughtfully designed family home.
Creating One Cohesive Space with a Custom Rug
One of the most important design decisions in this living room happened beneath everyone's feet. Because the room is both long and narrow, dividing the seating areas with multiple rugs would have interrupted the natural flow of the space. Instead, we designed a custom rug measuring 12 feet by 19 feet, 9 inches to visually unite the entire room.

Its generous scale allows every major seating piece to comfortably rest on the rug, creating a stronger sense of cohesion while making the room feel larger and more connected.
The rug's pattern became the foundation of the room's color palette. Soft blues, layered greens, and warm creams weave together in an organic design that brings harmony to the furnishings while adding movement and visual interest. Carefully selected pom details provide subtle texture and reinforce the relaxed elegance that defines the overall design. Custom rugs offer an opportunity to create exactly the right proportions, colors, and patterns for a space—something that simply isn't possible with standard-sized options.
Softening the room with thoughtful window treatments
Window treatments are often the finishing detail that quietly brings an entire room together. For this project, we selected a softly patterned fabric that echoes the room's established color palette while introducing a delicate bird-and-branch motif inspired by nature. This subtle biophilic element helps strengthen the home's connection to the outdoors while creating an atmosphere that feels calm, restorative, and welcoming.

Mounted on elegant French return rods, the drapery frames the windows beautifully while softening the architecture and filtering natural light throughout the day. The result is a room that feels warm, layered, and inviting from morning through evening.
A Living Room That Feels Like Home
The most successful living rooms aren't defined by individual pieces of furniture—they're defined by how they make people feel. For this family, that meant creating a room that encourages connection rather than perfection. A place where children can gather with friends, parents can unwind after a busy day, and guests naturally settle in for conversations that last long after the evening begins.
By thoughtfully blending cherished furnishings with carefully selected new pieces, custom planning, and personalized details, this living room reflects not only who this family is today but also the life they are continuing to build together.
