Monday Peek at a Project

By LuAnne Silvia, ASID
The most rewarding part of our work is making an impact on our client's lives by changing their environment. We recently had the pleasure of helping a busy St Paul family. With their children nearing teenage yeras they want their home to be a comfortable place for friends to gather. Their unfinished basement had potential to provide a media room. The basement has existing pipes located in the middle of the open space and low HVAC ductwork just above head height. They enjoy entertaining and spending time together as a family. They wanted to transform their unfinished space into a media room, a bedroom, a bathroom, and a laundry room. They also wanted to maintain some storage space, an overflow pantry, a tool bench and an exercise area. It was a space planning challenge! And a lot to consider: the architectural style of their older home and desire to have a connection between the upstairs and downstairs, the budget.
LiLu Interiors went to work and put pencil to paper. We explored options leaving the plumbing where it was and relocating it. Our role is to decipher all tof our clients wants and needs and find the best solution with the least amount of trade offs. A larger bedroom might mean a smaller laundry room. By laying out different options and discussing the function of each space we are able to help guide our clinets to understand what is on their must have list and what they might have initially thought was important only to discover they could live without. This process is the result of efficient space planning and creative problem solving. And each step is a chance to refine to get to the winning design.

After we had an opportunity to meet with the contractor and find out the possibility of moving HVAC and ceiling heights, and getting estimated numbers on relocating plumbing our clients were able to make an informed decision. They are thrilled with the plan for their basement and will enjoy having a space for teenagers to gather as well as a family media room.
