5 Simple Tips for Maintaining Your Luxury Interior

In a world of constant change and innovation, sometimes the most satisfying moments are those we spend at home. Accordingly, creating homes full of high quality furnishings and finishes that will last for years to come is something many of our clients value. Rather than purchasing low-quality, quick fix interior solutions, we see the value in furnishing homes in a way that encourages slow-consumption of high-quality products. Investing in a home that you truly love is no small undertaking, so maintaining it for years to come is an essential part of the investment. This week, we will let you in on five simple tips for maintaining your luxury interior.

#1: Cushion Care

First off, it's important to practice good cushion care on all of your upholstered furniture to help your luxury sofas and chairs last longer so you can enjoy sinking into them for years to come. Here's how to keep your sofas and chairs looking their best:

  • Rotate cushions regularly: To prevent uneven wear, rotate your cushions once a month. If someone in your household has a well-loved 'favorite spot', you might consider rotating more frequently.
  • Fluff and punch: Have some fun (and get in a bit of a workout) by regularly fluffing and punching your cushions to help maintain their shape and comfort. Lift and let them fall to the floor to redistribute the filling evenly. We recommend doing this weekly, daily, or even every time you sit on your upholstered furniture. It just depends on your preference.
  • Air out cushions: Occasionally, we recommend setting your cushions outside to refresh down filling.

Practicing good cushion care will help extend the lives of your luxury sofas and chairs, keeping them looking plush and inviting.

#2: Treat Your Rugs Kindly

It's no secret that high-quality rugs are an investment, but that investment is completely worthwhile for the quality, longevity, and style that comes with a luxury rug. However, rugs certainly require special care to maintain their beauty.

  • Rotate rugs: Rotate your rugs to prevent sun damage and distribute wear evenly. This helps to avoid visible traffic patterns and uneven fading, some of the most common maintanence issues we see with rugs.
  • Vacuum properly: Vacuuming your rugs at least weekly is the most important step to maintaining their beauty! You may be tempted to use a beater bar, but this isn't a great idea. Beater bars can damage the fibers of your rug and cause it to age faster.
  • Clean annually: Before getting your rug cleaned, it's important to understand it's construction. For example, tufted rugs should be spot-cleaned or dry-cleaned off-site. They should never be cleaned using a wet method, as it can damage the rug or weaken its integrity. On the other hand, hand-knotted rugs can be wet-cleaned off-site.

By treating your rugs with care, you ensure they remain a stunning centerpiece in your luxury interior for years to come.

#3: Have Extra Materials on Hand

The last thing you want is to have to think about replacing your entire wall-covering or tile floor when an accident happens and the material you used is backordered or out of production. When you're focused on maintaining your luxury interior, it's smart to have extra materials on hand for quick fixes.

  • Order extra: When purchasing items like wallpaper, fabric, or tiles, consider ordering a little extra. This can save you from having to replace an entire section if an accident occurs.
  • Prepare for accidents: Spills, cracks, or water damage can be addressed if you have extra materials on hand. For instance, an extra strip of wall-covering can replace a damaged section without the need to redo an entire room.

#4: Set Boundaries

If you've invested a significant amount into a beautiful rug or a formal room, we think it is totally okay to establish some rules and boundaries - in the end, they can really help protect your luxury interior from unnecessary wear and tear.

  • No food zones: For example, you may implement a no-eating rule in certain areas, such as formal living rooms or spaces with high-end rugs. Use these rooms for reading, playing games, or enjoying music instead.
  • Invisible fencing for pets: Consider using invisible fencing to keep pets off delicate rugs or out of specific areas. This can be preventative care for your furniture or rugs that can save you money and time in the long run.

  • Dedicated craft spaces: Create designated areas for crafts and art projects to keep these activities away from more delicate parts of your home. Plus, who doesn't love a designated crafting room?

#5 Choose the Right Materials

Choosing the right materials for your lifestyle and maintenance needs is another important part creating ease while maintaining your luxury interior.

  • Match materials to lifestyle: Be honest with your designer about your lifestyle and cleaning habits. Don't tell them about the life and cleaning habits you wish you had. Instead, give them the good, bad, and the ugly. You want to be able to plan for your families needs and maintain your home at the same time. For example, if your family wears shoes (even muddy shoes!) indoors, opt for durable flooring like porcelain tile. If you have dogs that sometimes go a little too long between nail trims, you'll want to avoid flooring that can easily scratch.
  • Durable surfaces: Choosing table tops made of stone or quartz, or covering your table tops with glass, can be a great measure to prevent maintenance issues. Selecting durable, easy-to-clean materials ensures your luxury interior remains both beautiful and practical for your everyday life.

Maintaining your luxury interior doesn't have to be an all-encompassing task. Following a few simple tips like the ones we've highlighted in this post can keep your space looking elegant and sophisticated for years to come. Remember, the key to preserving the beauty and enjoyment of your luxury interior is consistent care and attention to detail.

So glad you wrote this!! It’s the “fun” thing to look for and dream up all the selections for a luxury space…but not enough people are talking about maintaining it!! I’m especially excited about choosing fabrics, with all the amazing new performance fabrics that imitate other options but hold up better to wear and tear…
