Modernize Your Lower Level and Create a Dream Teen Hangout
A lower level remodel is the perfect way to breathe new life into an underutilized space in your home. Whether your family has outgrown a space once tailored to younger children or you're simply ready for a change, a well-planned lower level remodel can transform your basement into a versatile, entertaining space that everyone will love. On this week's blog, we're featuring a currently-in-progress lower level remodel that might inspire you to transform your own basement into an in-home hangout as the colder months approach.
Intention
The primary goal of this lower level remodel was to take an unused family room that had been well-suited to younger kids and reinvent it into a dynamic, entertaining space for teenagers. As children grow, their needs change, and the spaces in your home should evolve accordingly. This remodel aimed to create a space that would be inviting for teens while also being adaptable for future use by adults.
Exploring Materials
Choosing the right materials was a crucial part of the lower level remodel. To create a modern yet warm environment, we explored how to use materials like rift-cut white oak, stainless steel, Cambria countertops, bronze tile, and carefully selected paint colors. We created renderings to visualize how these materials would come together to create a cohesive and stylish look that would stand the test of time.
Designing Furniture Selection
Furniture selection was another key aspect of the lower level remodel. We focused on pieces that would serve the needs of teenagers today and remain functional and stylish as the space transitions for adult use in the future. One important decision was choosing between stationary or swivel chairs. We opted for swivel chairs, allowing for flexibility in the space—whether the chairs are facing the television for movie nights or the music performance space for jam sessions. We wanted to be thoughtful with the selection, making sure that the furniture fit perfectly with the floor plan and the intended use of the space.
Finalizing the Design
The culmination of our design process for this lower level remodel was a comprehensive set of construction documents. These included written specifications, a job book, and detailed construction drawings, all of which provided a clear roadmap for the contractor. This careful planning ensured that every detail of the remodel was meticulously executed.
Adjusting to Budget Considerations
After receiving pricing from their contractor, our clients decided that the original tile selection was more than they wanted to invest in this space. To accommodate their budget, we explored a variety of great tile options at lower prices, guiding their decision by considering both the cost and the availability of the materials. This allowed us to maintain the design integrity of the lower level remodel while staying within budget.
Progress and Final Touches
As the lower level remodel approaches completion, the space is really coming together. A foot rail at the bar and colorful bar stools are adding vibrant touches to the room. The budget-friendly tile looks stunning, proving that great design can be achieved without overspending. Additionally, the media center, featuring Plyboo cabinet fronts, adds texture and visual interest, making the lower level an inviting and dynamic area for the whole family to enjoy.
P.S. if you didn't already know, Plyboo is a beautiful, sustainable alternative to traditional plywood. It's made from bamboo and we love to use it! Check out their website here!

Hi Lisa ~
I loved seeing your design process explained so clearly and I also loved finding out about Plyboo as a sustainable alternative to wood.
This project is going to be so functional and comfortable and beautiful for your client when it’s fully completed – I can’t wait to see the final pictures!

I love the timing of this post for back-to-school!!
The bar space makes so much sense. Giving a group of friends a space to serve their sodas and prep their snacks will save messes later on furniture or tables *not designed* for food prep.
Great project, thanks for sharing!!
