Lake Spirit Retreat- According to LiLu

Lakeside Live, Work, Retreat
Up North lakeside living all year round. An outdoor lifestyle—and don’t forget the dog. Windows cracked every night for fresh air and woodland sounds. Art and artifacts to display and appreciate. Spaces for reading. A love of turquoise blue. LiLu Interiors helped a cultured, outdoorsy couple create their year-round home near Lutsen as a place of live, work, and retreat, using inviting materials, detailing, and décor that say “Welcome,” muddy paws or not.

When the couple found their perfect site on a small inland lake, the property had a house with an addition. They kept the addition as guest quarters. Within the older structure, SALA Architects inserted timber frame construction within existing walls, then created an open kitchen/living/dining area with stone hearth, along with two bedrooms, baths, offices, and a movie room. LiLu added the delight.

Turquoise is a Favorite

“LiLu gave us a turquoise-green slate floor for the living areas, which was brilliant,” says the homeowner. “We appreciate it every day, especially during mud season with the dog in and out.” LiLu highlighted her collection of turquoise-blue glassware and Native American artifacts, and created lighted shelves along a stairway for her books, “which makes me so happy,” she says. “I couldn’t have done this without LiLu; their expertise in finding and placing the fixtures was essential.”

Cozy Living

A built-in window seat on one side of the fireplace, and overlooking the lake, provides her with a spot “to curl up with a good book.” A built-in kitchen banquet (note the textile’s light turquoise-blue stripe) accommodates the whole family when the kids come to visit. The walls of the more formal dining room are a red fabric wallpaper “that’s rich, warm, and makes the room special,” says the homeowner. The home is a lake spirit retreat.

Resort Touches

The spa-like master bath includes a river rock and turquoise-green slate floor, and turquoise-blue countertops. “I never could have articulated that’s what I wanted in the bath,” says the homeowner, “but after picking out materials I liked, LiLu immediately understood.” Because the couple lives many miles from a cinema, and love to settle in with popcorn and a good film, LiLu outfitted them with a media or movie room downstairs. “It’s the right size, so cozy, and a really enjoyable space,” she says.

A Dream Realized

“LiLu was so adept at giving us amazing choices,” she adds. “They told us, ‘You should love everything.’

That was so liberating, and helped us realize and fully live in the home we’ve always dreamed of in the North Woods.”
