A Home Color Palette Authentic to You

Color, Environment, and Your Mood
There is no question that colors can affect our moods. We’ve all seen the studies that claim that fast food restaurants use color to make customers hungrier, or how picking the right color scheme for your bedroom can affect your sleep quality.
But let’s think about how color applies to our day to day lives so we can create a home color palette that is authentic to you.
Some colors are energizing – yellows, reds – bright shades of any color. Other colors are more calming – soft blues, greys, and natural greens. Neutrals provide an equalizer between energizing and calming shades; they are exactly what they sound like – neutral!
Color - Balance and Proportion
When creating your home color palette that is authentic to you, keep in mind to always use some neutrals, some accents, and some grounding colors to create a dynamic – yet balanced – space. Going overboard on one side of the color spectrum or the other can cause your space to feel too much of one thing.
However, if you want to create a bedroom that feels more calming, or a kitchen that feels more energizing, you might want to play with the proportions of this balance to tip the energy of your space to one side or the other.
You might use one overall color scheme throughout your whole house – a color palette that feels authentic to you – but add a bit more of those energizing shades in the kitchen, swapping out those to go a bit heavier on the calming shades in the bedroom.
Neutrals With a Pop of Color
There are many different, fun ways you can use color in a room. One direction you could go in is using mostly neutrals with some accents of color.
The upside of this is that you can easily change which color accents you use seasonally, or just when you get bored!
However, if you are a super upbeat person who loves as much color as is tasteful to surround yourself with – this option might not be the color palette that is authentic to you.
Monochromatic With Some Accents
A monochromatic color scheme is another option. Sometimes, when we mention a monochromatic color palette, people assume that we mean everything in a room is exactly the same shade of the same color – and this is simply not the case.
Monochromatic color schemes often involve a prevalence of multiple shades of the same color. This chic palette choice appears effortlessly intentional and eye-catching to visitors – and many rooms in old European castles (and the White House) have monochromatic color schemes.
This is a great option for the aestheticist – someone who loves deeply unified visual experiences. If you bore easily and love variety, a monochromatic color palette might not be the best option for you.

Finding Balance
One other avenue for a home color palette that is authentic to you is to find a true balance between color and neutral. This space will have a perfectly 50/50 split between colors and neutrals – making it fun, but still balanced and grounded.
This is a great option for someone who is vibrant and fun-loving but knows when to get serious when the time is right.
If you prefer your home to feel more grounding than it does exciting, or more exciting than it does grounding, this balanced palette might not be the best road to take.
When crafting a home color palette that is authentic to you, the most important thing to do is to fully embrace the colors you love. Don’t go too neutral if you love super vibrant, fun colors in your space, and don’t have too many energizing shades if you know that you love a neutral palette with pops of calming blues and greens.
Embrace exactly who you are and exactly what colors you love to surround yourself with, and you’ll find that you space feels as authentic as you do.
