Healthy Home Tips – Plastic Free July
Plastic Free July! Did you know that over 120 million take this pledge every year to not use single use plastic for the entire month! The website https://www.plasticfreejuly.org/ explains all of the details and even lets you take the pledge. What I found as I started looking into this challenge was really how much single use plastic is out there and how much we all use on a daily basis.
It is simple to get started but it does take some planning. The first steps are to look for what you use for your daily food and drink.
- Takeaway coffee cups: bring your own reusable cup to your own coffee shop
- Plastic water bottles: bring your own reusable water bottle with you to fill up. My favorite thing as been seeing the new drinking fountains where they make it easier and easier to fill a bottle.
- Plastic Straws: avoid at all costs or buy yourself a reusable stainless steel straw. They are available on amazon or your local store like Target.
The next place to look is how you are buying your food at your grocery store:
- Bring your reusable shopping bags with you
- Get some of these awesome bags for your fruits and vegetables. They have all different shapes and sizes available
- Bring your own glass containers for items like nuts or items you purchase in bulk. Be sure to weigh the glass before so you know the cost. I use glass jars from things like sauces but mason jars work well.
- For bakery items, bring cloth or soft bags to put your bread in
- Avoid the plastic trays when purchasing meat
If you do use plastic, remember to reuse and recycle. Plastic can be recycled into other things and people have made wonderful new items such as these entire playground sets.
These simple and easy items will make a huge impact for our planet. So much plastic ends up in our landfills and our oceans. Making a commitment to a not use single use plastic for a month is a small step with a big difference. If you don't think you want to tackle all of this at once then just start with one thing and when it becomes the norm than move on to another way. Perhaps start with a reusable water bottle then move on to reusable shopping bags, follow up with stainless steel straws and you have three simple ways you are making a difference!

I love my stainless steel straws! In Orlando all municipal buildings and venues have gotten rid of plastic straws.

I’m extremely inspired along with your writing talents as neatly as with the structure on your weblog. Is this a paid topic or did you customize it yourself? Anyway stay up the nice high quality writing, it’s rare to see a great blog like this one these days.
