Fireplace Design Challenge

by LuAnne Silvia, ASID
The fireplace in this condo appeared more like an afterthought than a feature. The living room, dining room and kitchen all are open to each other and the space needed a focal point. The wood baseboard and shoe was installed adjacent to the fireplace, making it look like an appliance. The client wanted to address the fireplace but budget was a concern. She also had an existing piece of art that she wanted to incorporate into the room. We thought the solution should complement the existing contemporary architecture.

Once we understand the design challenge and our client's goals we come up with a design concept to define the solution. Our concept was to add visual weight to fireplace and create a focal point within the room, to add interest through a mix of materials yet reference the existing finishes, the design to relate to the contemporary architecture, to design a moderate budget solution with high impact.
Tune in tomorrow to see the design process unfold as LiLu goes to the drawing board to sketch a solution
