Empty Nest Kitchen-Opening Up

By Lisa Peck

The dashed lines on this plan represent the original areas we removed from this kitchen in order to create our new design.

By creating an island where there was a penisula we created a direct connection between the cooking and dining areas of this kitchen. An attractive focal point of a high end range with a hood replaces the former refrigerator location. The new refrigerator location allows easier access to the sink and table and is closer to the family room also. A lounge chair in the kitchen allows one person to sit comfortably while speaking with the cook.

By opening up the wall between the kitchen and family room and adding a bar cabinet in it's place we increased the visual connection between the spaces but maintain each rooms function.
