Designing Across a Lifetime: A Timeless Guest Cottage Rooted in Family A Design Relationship That Spans a Decade
At LiLu Interiors, some of our most meaningful work happens over time.
We first partnered with this family more than a decade ago, when they were a close-knit household of three embarking on a full home remodel, to prioritize designing across a lifetime. Together, we shaped spaces that reflected their values—connection, comfort, and timeless design that would evolve alongside their lives, to cultivate a timeless guest cottage rooted in family a design relationship that spans a decade.
As the years unfolded, so did our collaboration. We redesigned their daughter’s bedroom as she moved into her teen years, creating a space that balanced personality with sophistication. We worked with the wife to design a refined and functional office at her workplace. We helped shape rooms in their vacation home to reflect relaxation and retreat. And when an exciting international career opportunity emerged, we guided them through designing living spaces that supported both transition and continuity.
Throughout every chapter, within designing across a lifetime, we maintained an ongoing relationship—refining, editing, and expanding their interiors in ways that felt cohesive rather than reactive.
Now, their story continues.
Designing Across a Lifetime: Guest Cottage Designed for Independence and Connection
With their daughter now an adult, the next evolution was clear: a custom guest cottage design that would allow her to stay close while maintaining independence when visiting home.
The cottage also serves extended family and friends—offering a flexible, welcoming space that supports multi-generational living without disrupting the rhythm of the main home.
This is not simply a guest house. It is a thoughtful extension of the family’s lifestyle.
Building on a Timeless Foundation when designing across a lifetime
The design draws directly from the classic, tailored aesthetic we established in their primary residence. Maintaining continuity was essential. The goal was not to create something trendy or disconnected—but rather a space that felt naturally woven into their story.
The color palette builds on the tones used in the main home, with the addition of red—a long-standing favorite that brings warmth and personality. By layering this meaningful color into the design, the cottage feels both fresh and deeply familiar.
Large upholstered pieces remain neutral, allowing flexibility in the years ahead. Accent colors can shift and evolve without requiring a complete redesign—an approach that supports longevity over trend.
Designed for Entertaining and Everyday Living
The cottage opens directly to a grill patio, intentionally blurring the line between indoor and outdoor living. Furniture placement supports gathering—whether it’s sharing a meal, watching a game, or hosting movie night.

There’s space for their daughter to invite friends without overtaking her parents’ home. At the same time, extended family can comfortably stay, connect, and unwind.

This balance—independence and belonging—is at the heart of our purpose in designing across a lifetime.
The Great Room: Flexible, Functional, Welcoming
At the center of the cottage is a thoughtfully designed great room that supports multiple modes of living.

A dedicated desk area offers a quiet place to work remotely, while seating at the counter provides casual dining. A banquette creates a cozy, intimate space for shared meals.

The living area invites lounging, reading, or watching television. Every square foot works hard—without feeling crowded.

A subtle yet intentional detail: the desk chair is upholstered in the same fabric as the dining chairs, allowing it to transition seamlessly into the dining area when additional seating is needed. This layered flexibility ensures the space adapts effortlessly to larger gatherings.
Layered Textures and an “Acquired” Look
One of the defining elements of the cottage is the rug—warm, welcoming, and reminiscent of a favorite sweater. Its multi-colored pattern adds depth while remaining family-friendly and easy to maintain.

The palette feels collected rather than curated. Pattern scales vary intentionally, and textures range from smooth painted finishes to rich wood tones. By combining wood and painted furniture pieces, we achieved an “acquired over time” aesthetic that feels grounded and authentic.

Fabrics were carefully selected to complement the classic language of the main home—ensuring the cottage feels connected rather than separate.
The result is a space that feels timeless, layered, and deeply livable.
Designing Through Life’s Transitions
What makes this project especially meaningful is not just the design—it’s the relationship.
We have had the privilege of working with this family through many transitions: childhood to adolescence, professional growth, travel, relocation, and now adulthood. Each phase required listening, recalibrating, and designing with intention.
At LiLu Interiors, we believe great interior design is not about chasing trends. It’s about supporting the way families gather, evolve, and stay connected. It’s about creating spaces that reflect values—hospitality, independence, warmth—and making room for both everyday life and celebration.
Working with clients on designing across a lifetime, tailored to the chapters of their lives, is one of the greatest honors of our work. And designing spaces that hold those stories—that is what makes them truly timeless.
