Create a Happy Flowing Interior with Color
At LiLu Interiors, one of our guiding principles is this: a well-designed home should reflect your personality, lift your spirits, and flow effortlessly from room to room. A recent project offered us the perfect opportunity to bring this philosophy to life—and it all centered around how we could create a happy flowing interior with color.
Creating Flow: A Happy Vibe in a Rustic Ski Lodge inspired Interior
We were recently asked by a wonderful client to reimagine six spaces in their beautiful post-and-beam construction home. Their vision? A rustic ski lodge interior that still felt uplifting and happy. The challenge was to honor the home's architectural charm while infusing each room with warmth, joy, and personality.
If you caught last week’s blog on using circles in interior design, you’ll know it was inspired by this very client. She loves dots and circular patterns, which became a delightful thread tying the home together and enhancing our goal of creating visual and emotional flow.
Using Color to Create Flow
Color was central to our approach. We built custom fabric schemes around aqua blues, cheerful reds, and warm sandy neutrals—a palette that not only elevated the ski lodge aesthetic but also responded to key existing elements, like the backsplash in the kitchen.
Our client had pieces they loved—including a light fixture, console table, and buffet in the dining room —which we thoughtfully retained. We selected furnishings that flowed with the existing pieces.
In the dining room, we selected rustic yet sophisticated furnishings. A standout element was the Sylvie and Mira “Savannah Stripe” rug, which we custom-colored to perfectly suit our scheme. The dining chairs were upholstered in a whimsical polka dot fabric, and dark wood tones helped ground the room in the home’s natural, rustic feel. A wood-and-metal dining table added a thoughtful mix of materials.
Keeping What Matters & Enhancing the Experience
In the sunroom, we reimagined the floor plan to better capture the view, adding a large sofa and comfy lounge chair, all in fabrics echoing our central color story of reds, aquas, and sandy hues.
We intentionally mixed furniture styles in this room to achieve a collected, lodge-like aesthetic that still felt polished and personal.
A Fresh Take on Lodge Style in the Living Room
In the living room, we expanded seating with two large sofas and two lounge chairs. Aqua took center stage on the sofas, becoming a fresh “neutral” in this tall-ceilinged space. To ground the room, we chose a deep teal rug that added richness and balance.
Layers of Comfort in the Bonus Room & Loft
Upstairs, the bonus room—a favorite spot for TV watching—got a relaxed update. We used neutrals for larger furniture pieces to keep the cozy space feeling open, then added personality through colorful prints on pillows and a standout chair. Of course, one beloved recliner made it into the mix, because we always design for real life.
In the loft, we transformed the area into a serene reading nook. A comfortable new sofa, our client’s grandmother’s reupholstered chairs, and a mix of painted and light wood furniture brought softness to a wood-clad space while maintaining the rustic vibe.
A Polished Finish in the Home Office
The office needed only a few small but powerful updates. We reupholstered the existing chair and ottoman in fabric that echoed the home’s new palette and added a larger rug and polka dot window treatments that made the space feel cohesive and fresh.
The Power of Intentional Color
This project reminded us of the powerful role color plays in shaping a home’s mood. Whether it’s creating flow, inviting joy, or expressing personality, the right color palette can completely transform how a space feels.
We can’t wait to show you the final reveal of this rustic yet radiant lodge interior later this fall.
Until then, if you’re ready to create a happy flowing interior with color in your own home, we’d love to help you bring it to life.
