Christmas Decorating Traditions

By LuAnne Silvia, ASID
At Christmas time decorating for the holidays at our house is about including decorations from my Scandinavian heritage. What a great way to incorporate family heirlooms unique to your cultural background and pass along family traditions.
Here are some holiday decorations from my collection that I treasure and love to unpack each year. Most of them were given to me by my parents. All of the traditional Norwegian Rosemaling ornaments were painted by my mother, Shirley Evenstad, Rosemaling Vesterheim Gold Medalist.

This ornament is also by Shirley Evenstad, called Kolrosing. The design is achieved by using a knife to create the lines and then rubbing pine bark onto the surface which darkens and enhances the pattern. IMG_2051
