Peek at a Project: Master Bedroom Decorating Project

Ever wondered how designers start a decorating project? Or wondered what happens if a client doesn’t like a design? Well you curious cat, this blog post is for you! Follow along as we go over the project process that’s had proven results for us.

We’re working on a Master Bedroom update for one of our favorite long time clients. She’s got a great start already; all the furniture is staying. But she wants to take it to the next level to create a rejuvenating sanctuary. We’ll be adding new pillows, drapery, and light fixtures. We might paint the dresser and the walls as well.

We start with the client’s inspiration:

Our client loves green and blue. These colors are featured in the master bathroom window treatment fabric which adjoins the master bedroom. So we want to incorporate these colors for the new space.

The client also wondered if it might be fun to incorporate a little orange into the room as well. She sent us an inspiration image from Samuel & Sons to clue us in to her vision for the room.

After seeing these inspirational elements, we set to work building fabric schemes to present to the client. We always present multiple options. Why? Because it gives the client ownership of the design they’ll be living with. It helps our clients to feel like they’ve made the right decision when they are presented with multiple options that are all good choices. When they do come to a final decision, and eliminated some of the options, they know it’s the one they really want and they’ll love it for years to come.

Materials Schemes:

Each material scheme starts with a “Magic Fabric”, a multicolored fabric that establishes a color palette from which we can pull coordinating companion fabrics. In this case, there’s green and blue in every scheme, but some schemes bring in other colors and sometimes blue is emphasized, sometimes green.

The Winning Scheme:

There always seems to be one fabric that jumps out from the rest that a client loves and wants to build the scheme around. For this client, it turns out she didn’t really want to bring in orange like she thought she might. Turns out, the heart wants what the heart wants (blue and green!) Here are her picks!
