From House to Home: According to a LiLu Client

From House to Home

It was new and so pretty, with beautiful bones and lovely millwork,” says Anne of the Edina house she moved into with her family in 2012. But the house “didn’t have any history and not much of a soul.” Anne and her family care deeply about aesthetics and have catholic tastes ranging from traditional to contemporary with an emphasis on the artisan and bespoke. The house, in other words, needed to become their home—an expression of their personalities and values. Essentially taking it from house to home.

A Place for Self-Expression

For Anne’s sons, fraternal twins, “LiLu gave them the permission and the space to express themselves as individuals” in their bedrooms. One boy, who’s outdoorsy and loves Jackson Pollock, received a large desk (as requested), a window seat, decorative oars, and a fabulous splatter wallpaper on the ceiling. For the other, who asked for a gentleman’s room, a gray upholstered headboard, gray and red-striped window shades, and a plaid club chair with leather ottoman.

A Grounded Sanctuary

Anne also reached out to LiLu “to create groundedness and sanctuary” in the home, she says. “We wanted a sense of layering, of depth, with things ethically and sustainably sourced that bring the world to us with provenance, meaning, and stories.” LiLu designed a vanity with a marble top “that makes the little powder room sing,” Anne says. A Dunes and Duchess table in a custom color, drapes of Italian textiles with specialty lining, Galbraith & Panel wallcoverings, blue animal-print chairs, and a bubble table in the den “are a wonderful foil to our otherwise traditional furnishings,” Anne says.
Having furnishings with a story is a key way to take your house from house to home.

A Story Designed Just for Us

For Anne and her family, “home is an incredibly intimate aspect of our lives. You can feel very vulnerable when giving someone permission to create the most sacred space in your life,” she says. “What’s special about LiLu is you become a bit of a protégé, and receive a primer on home design by virtue of their partnership and tutelage.” After working with LiLu for nearly five years on décor, custom cabinetry, and a small basement remodel, Anne adds, “everything in our home now has a story behind it and was designed just for us.”

Hi Anne: This is one of Lisa’s regular blog readers. Your home is just gorgeous. I love how intentional and calm each space in your home looks, and I especially love all of the window seats for curling up with a book or a toy or a video game. Your sons are fortunate to have a Mom who was able to give them such personalized spaces.
