Designing a Custom Rug – Peek at a LiLu Project

Follow along as we look at the step by step process of designing a custom rug. First step is to determine the size and pattern. We start by measuring your space and sketching it to scale. Designing a custom rug allows you to get exactly the size and pattern that fits perfectly in your space.

Next step is to choose a pattern. There are many ready-made patterns available that you can custom color or we often design our own pattern. Once you have a pattern selected the really fun part begins, choosing the colors! With trays of rug poms available, there are endless colors to choose from. Designing a color palette with the rug poms it is easy to visualize how the colors will work together.
See more of this process on check out Linda Holt's recent One Room Challenge. We worked with her to create custom colors of Sylvie and Mira rugs (Our sister company) for her interior.

Next up is laying out the colors within the pattern. This is where computer programs are efficient! They allow us to see how the pattern changes depending on where we place each color. And you can compare several color versions of the same pattern rug.

Once a computer rendering has been selected we request a sample for approval. Because computer renderings are only as good as the screen resolution it is important to get an actual sample. Once you see it in person this is also the time to make any changes. When you request a sample for approval it will add a little time to the overall process, but is worth the time.  More importantly you will know exactly what you are getting.

Take a peek at the following photos that follow the journey of two different rugs. They share a similar color palette but are very different in style. Whether you are designing a custom rug that is traditional or contemporary pattern taking the time to get it just right will ensure you have a custom rug that you love for years to come!
