Custom Hand Knotted Rug: Peek at a Project

PEEK AT A PROJECT

Ever wondered about the process of creating a custom hand knotted rug? Check out this blog as we show you the process we are going through to design a custom rug for a client’s living room in their new construction home.

Step 1:

First, we started by showing the client several different patterns to choose from.

Step 2:

Select colors from out wool pom box.

Step 3:

Create digital renderings of how the colors could lay out on the pattern.

Step 4:

After a design and color layout have been selected, we order a “strike off.” That means the weavers create a 12” x 12” or 24” x 24” sample for us to approve.

Step 5:

We tweak the colors if necessary. The digital rendering is a helpful tool, but sometimes the way the colors combine in real life isn’t quite right. If we make changes, we order another strike off.

Step 6:

When we have everything perfect, we sign off on the order. It will take at least 3 months for a large rug to be woven by hand by skilled artisans. But it is always so worth it to have a one-of-a-kind, perfectly coordinated rug for your home that will last a lifetime.
How we created this custom hand knotted living room rug:
For this rug, we had already selected all of the upholstery, pillow, and window treatment fabrics. So we needed a rug that would repeat these exact colors and ground the space. We selected poms that matched our main pillow fabrics. Our rug design had 4 colors and a background color, so we had to choose what to emphasize. At this point, we are still working through how the colors lay out best. Which rendering is your favorite?

Pro tip: Multiple repetitions of precise colors within a space is a fool proof way to make your room look really complete and pulled together.
