A Soft Place to Fall for Kids-According to LiLu Interiors
A Soft Place to Fall for Kids-According to LiLu Interiors
Labor Day has passed and with it the care-free days of summer. Our kids have returned to school and my thoughts are on all the kids who started kindergarten, middle school, high school, their senior year. All the years start with great hope for a wonderful, fun year of growth both academically and socially for our kiddos. When I think back on my days at school, I know I mostly enjoyed them but along with the fun and curiosity there was also some pressure to fit in, to be the best, to strive and work and build a good future for myself. There are people who firmly have a foot in the childhood is “the best time of life” but I believe our kids work and struggle and strive as much if not more than any adult. And in today’s world with its strife, stress and social media I think we owe it to our kids to create a home and a room for them that is a soft place to fall.
Our number one tip
Let your kid make the decisions about their room. If they like a wall color you consider overly bright…it’s just paint. If they like a collection of memorabilia that looks like clutter to you let it go…they will one day move out along with their collection and you will miss it. For big permanent pieces of the room that you are making a significant investment in, make them a neutral backdrop. Then let your child decorate in a way that suites them! From a fairy tent to moody LED lights, having a room that suits them gives them a haven from the pressures of the world.

Number two
Almost regardless of your kids age, everyone needs a soft wubby. I know, middle-schoolers and teens have grown out of a special blanket or toy that they cherish. But give them one anyway, just disguise it. For little kids, a happy pile of stuffed animals offer both opportunities for play and comfort but as kids get older, consider including a soft as fur throw, a fuzyy pillow and lots of soft textures so their room can literally comfort them after a hard day.

Number three
A way to get away! Include a way to get away from the pressures of the world even further inside their rooms. My oldest has a “cupboard under the stairs” type of closet in her room that during middle school she would retreat into to read a book. All she needed was a bean bag chair, a soft blanket and a flash light to transform this space into a little bit of magic for herself. In other kids’rooms we have used a tent, a canopy bed or a special sitting area to create a little magic space just for that child. A little spot that they can sit and reflect quietly or immerse themselves into a world apart in their favorite book.
