One of the most rewarding aspects of our work can be summed up in a single sentence “You changed my life!” We interact with our built environments on a daily basis and designing a space that works to support you in how you live at home has a great impact. My greatest joy in design, the element that is nearest and dearest to my own heart can be summed up in a single word: ORGANIZATION. I love all things organized! Thinking through the details and designing a space for everything makes my heart sing! We recently designed a home office for a client that includes wide drawer for gift wrap, a counter height work table for standing projects (including wrapping gifts!), a magnetic bulletin board, closed storage for the necessities, open shelves for the pretties, and a desk for her young daughter to grow into and sit along side her Mother. The best part of the whole experience was hearing our client say how having a place for everything, including her daughter has changed her home life. Here is a peek at the project.

Here are a few quick snapshots of a space we recently designed and installed. This lower level was partially finished, but didn’t have all the necessary storage. We packed this small basement with cabinets to not just create storage space, but to create really organized storage. We worked with the homeowner to understand what items needed to be stored and where.
We stuck with light finishes so the space wouldn’t feel heavy with all the cabinetry. It’s also a lower level, so natural light was limited.
The lower level has everything you would need and could function as a small apartment. The space features a small lounge, with a sectional for napping or TV watching, and a small kitchenette for snacks and beverages. There is an office that can be converted to a bedroom. A laundry room with all the bells and whistles and a new bathroom.

According to LiLu, when designing a new space, you should always consider how the space is actually used and the needs of everyone who uses it. We recently designed a space for a client and her two daughters. And perhaps most importantly, we designed the space for their adorable dog, Sandie. When we first met Sandie, it became immediately apparent, that she’s in charge! We knew she would use the furniture just as much as anybody else, so we took necessary precautions.
Here is Sandie’s doggy bed where we did a cushion cover in an outdoor fabric. The doggy bed is tall enough so she can get herself up close to the window and see out. But Sandie doesn’t just perch on her doggy bed….
She sits on all the furniture. So we put stain resistant finishes on all the fabrics. And she even likes to get on top of the coffee table. A slightly distressed finish was the best choice here. Small scratches will just blend in. She took an immediate liking to this little footstool we designed. Stain resist finish here too!

At LiLu, we always say every project is different. But we commonly design built ins for a lot of our clients. Why? Built ins add storage and an architectural element that furniture case pieces cannot always provide. It’s easy to get stuck doing the same thing over and over, a simple door style, an ordinary toe kick… But one design does not fit all!
Designing custom built ins and furniture is one of my favorite parts of the job. There are so many things to consider and the possibilities are endless. Here’s a run down of a few things we keep in mind when designing:
-Amount of storage needed
-Depth of storage needed; what is being stored? will special items fit?
Design in the details:
-Do we want it to look like cabinetry?
-Do we want it to look like a piece of furniture?
-What do we want it to be made out of and why?
-Wood stain or painted?
-Decorative materials applied?
-What will the durability of this finish be? Will it last? Will it stand up to kids/pets?
It’s a long list! All of the answers to these questions are important and vary depending on the client and project. Now that I have droned on about the intricacies of the built in, (can you tell it’s my favorite thing to work on?) let’s take a look at some of the ways LiLu has applied these ideas….
A locally built, custom cabinet with applied hand made wallcovering
Here we created our own door style! These doors have patterned dimension for visual interest. And let’s not forget the custom toe kick- no detail was overlooked! No hardware on this piece- we used touch latch doors so hardware wouldn’t distract from the design.
Another wallcovering applied to a built in media unit. But this time with an extra thick wood top. No thick stile and rail on the doors, just a really thin bead.
We used really simple details for this contemporary residence. Kerf lined doors, a solid surface top instead of plain wood, and sleek hardware. Monochromatic finishes for a really architectural look.

Here at LiLu, we love to do custom furniture pieces that are exactly what our clients need…for both aestheic but more importantly for function. We have had an opportunity to design Puzzle Tables for a client in the waiting rooms of their spaces. Each table is to have the function of a coffee table but also to hold a puzzle that guests can enjoy putting together while they wait.
The design is consistent in that we use a plastic laminate of various colors for durablility, an exposed plywood lip that helps hold the puzzle on the table, and the correct dimensions to fit each space. The design changes as the site changes. Since each projects is unique in its own way we are able to create tables that fit into each design.
